STANSTED Airport was today given the go-ahead by the government to build a new runway.

In a move which delighted East Anglian business leaders and dismayed environmental campaigners, transport secretary Alistair Darling revealed details of the government's aviation White Paper to the House of Commons.

The Stansted runway decision was expected to be badly received by airlines and airport operator BAA. They would all prefer a third, short runway at the UK's biggest airport, Heathrow.

The plan includes a new runway at Stansted airport will be built by 2011-2012 and an extra, short runway at Heathrow after that.

But the Heathrow runway is not envisaged until the period 2015-2020 and then only if strict noise and air quality levels are met.
