FREE champagne and chocolate cake was on offer to for shoppers at the opening of a new supermarket this morning.
Dozens of people queued up to be allowed into the new Somerfield store on Carr Street when it opened its doors at 9am, and soon crowds were pouring in.
Shoppers entering the store were given sparkling wine and goodie bags containing cakes, chocolate bars and juice cartons.
Paul Bradford, the store manager, said: “We are all very excited. It is the first time Somerfield has entered into Ipswich. There has been a fantastic response from customers and the feedback is already very positive.
“It is an ideal location for a Somerfield. The store is aimed at the convenience market, it has everything you would need. ”
The store was officially opened by Rebecca Lee, who has worked for Somerfield 45 years, starting out as a ham carver before working her way up to deputy manager at the Clacton store.
