His attacker, Timothy Bailey has today started a 22-months behind bars after pleading guilty to robbery.
The 13-year-old victim had been delivering papers in the Britannia Road area of Ipswich when Bailey approached him and asked if he had a "spliff".
Ipswich Crown Court heard that Bailey, 20, of Tyler Street, took the teenager's bicycle and then taunted him by saying: "What would you do if I nicked your bike".
Peter Gair prosecuting said the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, called his father on his mobile telephone.
He said it was the middle of the day when Bailey ran over, grabbed the boy round the waist, knocked him over and stole his phone.
The boy and his two friends were helped by staff at a nearby hairdressers, who described the teenage victim as "distressed and crying".
Bailey who admitted he was drunk at the time sold the phone for £70 to buy alcohol.
The court heard that Bailey was "ashamed" of his behaviour.
Judge John Holt heard that Bailey had a record for violence, dishonesty and drunkenness.
He said Bailey had repeatedly breached court orders and this was the most serious offence he had committed so far.
Bailey was sent to a young offenders institute for a total of 22 months.
