AN Ipswich jury of eight women and four men found an Afghan father not guilty of trying to abduct a three-year-old boy.

Izatollah Assadi of St Helen's Street, Ipswich, who has a wife and two young children in his homeland, had pleaded not guilty to attempted child abduction.

The 31-year-old asylum seeker told the court he had picked a flower to give to a 14-year-old girl who he believed was 18. He said he wanted to ask her if she would be his girlfriend.

The court heard that instead of the girl the little boy she was minding came over to his car when he waved the flower.

The jury took 90 minutes to return their unanimous not guilty verdict at Ipswich Crown Court yesterday.
