Police have reopened the A14 at the Orwell Bridge after it was closed this morning due to concerns for the safety of a man who was spotted on the bridge.

A police spokesman said a man had been detained by police at around 11.25am.

Officers closed the road in both directions, with eastbound traffic being taken off at Wherstead and westbound drivers being diverted at the Nacton Interchange.

They were called to the scene at 9.50am.

Traffic was at a standstill in both directions between junction 56, Wherstead and junction 57, the Nacton Interchange, with congestion back to the Copdock Interchange on the eastbound side and Seven Hills on the westbound carriageway.

Drivers were also queuing on the A1214 London Road northbound just before the A137 West End Road junction.

A spokesman for the coastguard said two crews from Harwich had launched to support the police operation.
