POLICE investigating the murder of a man in Braintree have reassured the local community that the stabbing is not thought to be a random attack.

An 18-year-old man is already in custody after the body of a 25-year-old was found in Coldnailhurst Avenue, Bocking.

Officers were contacted by the ambulance service at about 10pm on Tuesday night following reports of a stabbing.

Early enquiries suggest that a number of people were gathered together near the bus station and phone box, at the junction of Coldnailhurst Avenue and Lancaster Way, shortly before assault.

Superintendent Tim Newcomb said:

“It is very rare for Braintree to experience an incident of such a violent nature. I know there is a school very close to the scene of the attack and I fully appreciate that an incident of this nature can shake a community but I want to assure everyone that this does not appear to be a random assault.”

A knife was recovered from nearby but it may not be the one used in attack. Anyone who comes across a blade should leave it where it is and call police.

Detective Supt John Quinton, heading the investigation at Essex police's major investigation unit, said:

“There are at least two other men I am keen to speak to in relation to this inquiry.

I am also keen to speak to anyone who saw anything in the Coldnailhurst Avenue area between 6pm and midnight that may be relevant to the investigation.

We believe that at some point a small dark saloon car pulled up and the assault occurred.

There will be people locally who are key witnesses to what happened or who have heard whispers about who is involved.”

Anyone with any information can call police on 0300 333 4444.
