Detectives have declined to say whether they had formally warned specific people that their lives could be in danger after an alleged double murder at an Ipswich travellers’ site.

Last Thursday, Nathan Oakley, 18, and 32-year-old Barry Street, who both lived at West Meadows near the slip road to the A14 at Whitehouse, died in a double-stabbing.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested in Paper Mill Lane, Bramford, the same afternoon. He was charged over the weekend with their murders.

The teenager, who is from Ipswich but can not be identified due to his age, appeared in court on Monday.

His case has been sent to Ipswich Crown Court where he is due to make his next appearance on January 9.

Feelings have been running high since the alleged murders with a heavy police presence at West Meadows in the days following the deaths.

It is understood some people have been moved for reasons relating to their personal safety.

Asked whether formal threats to kill warnings had been issued to anyone who may be at risk, Timothy Cracknell a spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary said: “As this is an ongoing operation we are unable to confirm or deny anything that may or may not be part of it.”

On Sunday night two static caravans were destroyed after allegedly being set alight at West Meadows.

Other vehicles, buildings, and street furniture were destroyed and a horse sustained fatal injuries and had to be put down by a vet.

Six people have been charged with arson with intent to endanger life and criminal damage as a result of the incident.

They include a 14-year-old boy from Essex.

The six have appeared before Ipswich magistrates who sent their cases to the town’s crown court.

All except the youth have been remanded in custody.

Their next appearance is scheduled for Ipswich Crown Court on January 11.
