POLICE dogs from East Anglia were today competing in Suffolk for the crown of best pooch in the eastern region.

Police dogs and handlers from Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire were being put through their paces at Suffolk police's Martlesham headquarters.

It is the first time in a decade that the Eastern Region Police Dog Trials have been held in Suffolk and competing for the home force was Pc Nick Self with his canine Taz and Pc Steve Vaughan with Shadow.

Pc Self and Taz have won the trials for the past four years and were National Champions in 2005.

These will be Taz's last trials before he retires as a police dog.

Pc Vaughan and Shadow came second to Taz and Pc Self in last year's regional competition.
