A POLICE officer cleared of theft 14 years ago was today starting a 12-month jail term after being convicted of stealing £1,100 from a sick elderly man's savings while on duty.
A POLICE officer cleared of theft 14 years ago was today starting a 12-month jail term after being convicted of stealing £1,100 from a sick elderly man's savings while on duty.
Pc David Clarke, 45, from Suffolk Police, was also found guilty of stealing £60 which had been planted in an abandoned car by detectives who mounted a sting operation.
Clarke, who had worked as a patrol officer in Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds and has been a police officer for 23 years, had denied two allegations of theft and claimed he had been “fitted up”.
