In a statement Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen, with great sadness, has asked for the following announcement to be made immediately.
"Her beloved sister, Princess Margaret, died peacefully in her sleep this
morning at 6.30am in the King Edward VII Hospital."
Chairman of Ipswich Town Football Club David Sheepshanks today paid tribute to the Princess: "I was very sad to hear of the death of Princess Margaret and the club's flags will fly at half mast at today's match with Liverpool as a mark of respect."
