A WOMAN who claimed she was raped on a train travelling between Ipswich and Colchester yesterday denied that she fancied her alleged attacker and willingly had sex with him.

The 22-year-old mother of two, from Ipswich told a jury at Ipswich Crown Court she had still been sore from an abortion a few weeks earlier and sex would have been "completely out of the question".

The woman was giving evidence on the second day of the trial of 23-year-old Abdul Hassan of Manor Park, London, who has denied raping her on March 28, 2001.

It has been alleged that Hassan and two of his friends approached the woman while she was sitting alone in a carriage on an evening train from Ipswich to Colchester.

The woman had felt uncomfortable and had got up to move away. However as she did so the men surrounded her and forced her into a toilet cubicle where she was allegedly raped by Hassan.

She claimed that throughout her ordeal Hassan's two friends were banging on the door telling him to hurry up and as he finished raping her one of his friends started undoing his trousers. "I thought he was going to rape me as well," said the woman.

At that moment the train started to slow down as it approached Colchester station and the men disappeared. The woman got off the train and told a relative what had happened to her the next day. She made a complaint to the police three days after the alleged rape.

Giving evidence yesterday she said she had been reluctant to report the matter to the police because of her experiences as a child when she was indecently assaulted by her grandfather who was subsequently jailed for six months.

"I didn't want to have to deal with the same situation as when I was a child."

"I didn't feel there had been justice then and I didn't want to go through it again," she said.

Cross-examined by defence counsel Patricia Lynch QC, the woman denied chatting to the defendant.

"He was attracted to you and you were attracted to him," said Miss Lynch.

The woman replied: "No, I already have a boyfriend. He might have been chatting me up but it wasn't two-way."

The woman denied agreeing to go to the toilet with Hussan and willingly having sex with him.

The trial continues today.
