Effervescent stand-up Joel Dommett is probably still best known for two things - his endearing stint on I’m a Celebrity... Get me Out of Here, and an unfortunate online leak of a somewhat revealing nature.

Both of these topics cropped up during his 90 minute set at the Regent on Thursday, but there’s clearly much more to the 33-year-old from Gloucestershire.

From his unusually small feet (size 6 and a half, for a chap of about 6ft - perfect for Heelys) to his love of early-noughties Nu Metal music, the show saw him lay bare his disappointing dating efforts and outline his worst ever lie.

That lie - that saw him miss his best pal’s wedding in Thailand due to “family problems” - came back round in an unexpected twist towards the end, while anyone who thinks observational comics are running out of things to “observe” and ponder in a light hearted fashion would be pleased to hear Joel picked up on the classroom tradition of putting chairs on desks at the end of the day (“why don’t we do it at the office?”).

Dommett has an engaging, charming manner and contagious sense of fun that at times masks a slight lack of genuinely funny material, but it doesn’t matter much - time rattled by and the crowd lapped it all up, and most will have gone home with a certain Christmas carol going round their heads.

A thoroughly enjoyable night in the company of a talented comedian who’s star can only continue to rise.
