Almost 1,800 people have signed up for Sunday’s run, with the route taking in parts of the town centre and Christchurch Park.

The event marks the culmination of a number of high-profile events that have brought thousands of visitors to the town in recent weeks.

Now firmly established in the racing calendar, the Ipswich Half Marathon is again sponsored by chartered accountants and business advisors, Larking Gowen. The race will start at 10am on Sunday in Christchurch Park, where it will also finish.

Race director Carl Ashton, of event organisers Ipswich JAFFA Running Club, said there had been a record number of entries.

He said: “It is going from strength to strength, and each year we try to reinvest in the race. It’s not just a half marathon, it’s an event for the whole community to enjoy - and I hope there will be plenty of supporters out on the course to cheer the runners on.

“We have all been working hard over the last few weeks and I would like to thank all the volunteer marshals and Ipswich Borough Council for helping to organise a great event, and of course Larking Gowen for their continued support.”

David Ellesmere, council leader, said: “It’s great to welcome the half marathon back into Ipswich.

“It’s a fantastic event that draws thousands of people into the town and the weather forecast is looking good for Sunday so I hope lots of people get out and cheer them on.”

This year, the event will raise money for Macmillan.

There will also be a free family fun run taking place at 9.15am - ahead of the main race. All children under eight must be accompanied by an adult.

And teams of workers will be battling it out in the Business Challenge, with the times for three runners counting towards a team time.

Bryony Rudkin, deputy leader for the borough council, said the half marathon was a “sporting finale” to a fantastic summer for Ipswich.

Last weekend, the streets were packed with people hoping to catch a glimpse of the cyclists taking part in the Tour of Britain.

Ipswich has also recently played host to the inaugural Twilight Race - which attracted international class athletes - and the Aviva Women’s Tour.

Ms Rudkin added: “But it is by no means the last big event in town – we are now looking forward to the fireworks extravaganza in Christchurch Park and a big festive market in the town centre. Add in Aladdin and leading West End shows at the Regent Theatre and you have everything you could wish for. Ipswich has something for everyone throughout the year.”
