WESTBOURNE High School was closed today as staff cleared up after the deluge.

Deputy headteacher Dave Thomas said many of the classrooms and laboratories had been flooded – and the toilets had been blocked by the amount of rain that flowed in.

Headteacher Christopher Edwards had decided last night that the school would have to be closed today while it was cleaned and an assessment was made of any damage caused.

Mr Thomas said: "We have people coming in from the county council to assess if there are any major problems, but it is essentially a case of drying everything out.

"Many of the floors are soaked and we are trying to dry them out – we're getting in some de-humidifiers to try to speed up the job."

All the pupils had been told to take the day off except for those who were out on a pre-arranged school trip.

But the school was confident it would be able to re-open its doors to pupils tomorrow.

Mr Thomas said: "Everything should be back to normal by then, although there might still be a bit of damage around."
