ONE of the region's top independent schools has been saved from closure after parents pledged their support.
The future of the all-girls' Saint Felix School, near Southwold, had been in doubt for the past nine days since the governors announced it could not continue due to "unsustainable losses" – reported to be in the region of £1.2 million – over the past two years.
It was originally announced that land and buildings would be sold and 130 girls from the school would be moved to an unnamed independent school in the area.
But a series of meetings involving governors, staff and parents took place and pledges of support were given which guaranteed the financial security of the school.
Streamlining measures will be introduced and "substantial savings" will be made as a result of combining the two schools (Saint Felix and St. George's Preparatory School) on one site, although they will both maintain separate identities.
