Treacherous ice sheets have covered scores of roads and pathways across Ipswich and Suffolk as Arctic temperatures cause havoc.

But questions were today being asked as to why the extremely hazardous conditions had not been tackled by council gritting teams in the days since snow fell on shivering Suffolk.

The issue came to a head on Christmas Eve when the emergency department at Ipswich Hospital was inundated with those who had suffered falls.

Meanwhile, the Minor Injuries Unit at the Riverside Clinic in Ipswich saw a 200 per cent increase in numbers of patients.
