Ballingdon Bridge in Sudbury was closed for more than two hours after the woman in her 70s was found shortly before midday today.
She was airlifted to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds where she remains in a critical condition.
A police spokeswoman said they were hoping to speak to the woman at the earliest opportunity to find out what happened to her. She also appealed for any witnesses who may have seen what happened to call Sudbury police station on 01284 774100.
