Members of the Ipswich Society are being asked whether they want to see the market return to the Cornhill or stay in its current position when the work in the town centre is completed at the end of October.
The borough has said it should stay at the top of Princes Street, in Giles Circus and in Queen Street.
The Cornhill itself would then be clear for special events running over several days – and to provide an open space for people to meet or sit down and eat sandwiches in the middle of the day.
The market would not be able to occupy its previous position because that will be the site of the water feature and outside Pret a Manger which is expected want to encourage people to eat outside.
Ipswich Society chairman John Norman, writing in the current newsletter, is urging members to let the committee know what they think.
He said: “I think it is clear that the council wants the market to stay where it is – to really be able to show off the Cornhill after all the work will mean that could not be full of market stalls for most of the week.
“And if we want to have major events and festivals over weekends on the Cornhill, we could not have it always dominated by the market.
“But many of our members are still very concerned at the cost of the work and feel that the market must be allowed to return to its home on the Cornhill – they feel that the drawings produced suggest that would be happening.
“We want to get a feel of what people think about this and give them the chance to express their point of view.”
Borough leader David Ellesmere said: “We have had a lot of comments from members of the public who have said the market should remain in its current position at the top of Princes Street when work is completed.
“It will be open to the Cornhill so it will be more visible – and having spent quite a lot of money on the Cornhill it would not make sense to have the market there so things like the water feature could not be used.”
He said the council would keep the situation under review – but did not feel it was realistic to expect the market stalls to return to their original positions once the work is complete.
The work is due to be completed by October 31 – or possibly the first day or two of November – well in time for the big Christmas lights switch-on.
