WHILE most businesses support the move of the Ipswich market to the Cornhill, some have serious reservations.

The Golden Lion Hotel, next to the Town Hall, has made its objections clear and is to repeat them when the planning application is discussed later this month.

"We are very worried about the disruption to our guests," said a spokesman for the hotel.

"If the market does move to the Cornhill, there will be a lot of noise early in the morning and it will cause big problems for us, we should be considered as a residential area," he said.

The hotel had been following the debate, but its management had to consider its interests above everything.

"We know what the market traders are saying and why they are saying that, but we have to fight our corner in this argument," said the spokesman.

Market traders' spokesman Mike Young said stallholders would try to be reasonable when setting up.

"In other towns there are markets near hotels or flats and the stalls are not set up until after 7am.

"By that time there is a lot of activity anyway with deliveries and council cleaners out and about," he said.

And he felt the hotel might change its mind when the market was operating there. "I'm sure they won't complain about the extra trade the market brings them," he joked.
