A Suffolk college says it will encourage students to be “good neighbours” after people living in nearby roads complained their driveways had been blocked by young drivers turning the area into a giant carpark.

Residents of Wentworth Drive in Pinewood claim students driving to Suffolk One were parking illegally along the road with some acting in a “ disrespectful and quite aggressive manner”.

They say the parking problem has trapped them in their homes while larger vehicles such as fire engines, ambulances and bin lorries cannot access the road.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “There really is a need for a student car park as there is simply nowhere for the students to leave their cars and they are clearly not willing to use public transport. It’s a problem across the whole Pinewood and Chantry area around the college.”

Another added: “Our road has become like an NCP car park. We have disrupted bin collections, grass verges ruined, deliveries to homes hampered and visitors not being able to park. This is our home - it’s where we live.”

The residents say they have complained to the college and police but were left “frustrated” by the response. Several have written to one of the division’s county council candidates.

The college says it is working with students, neighbours and police “to develop tolerance and understanding” but there was no space for extra on site parking.

Deputy principal Jenny Milsom said: “At Suffolk One we continue to work with our students to instil in them the importance of being good neighbours and if parking in the local area to park respectfully, in addition we are working closely with the police. We discourage driving to college and for those who do, we encourage them to park in the park and ride car park. Not all students do this and we appreciate that it is not wholly convenient for residents to have people parking in the roads locally

“However on many occasions the police have patrolled the local roads and reported back that cars have not been parked illegally.

Mrs Milsom advised people to contact the police if they believe a student is parking illegally.

Suffolk police said several reports of parking issues had been raised recently, including one yesterday morning. “The safer neighbourhood team are aware and monitoring the issue; they will take action where necessary,” a spokesman added.
