SUFFOLK New College is today showcasing the skills of its students at the Suffolk Show.

Apprentices and other young people in training will be on the showground on both days to demonstrate and compete in the skills they have been acquiring throughout the college year.

Activity on the Suffolk Skills stand ranges from bricklaying to beauty therapy, from furniture making to catering.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk New College said: “Students from Suffolk New College, along with the other colleges of Suffolk compete for the Dick Hollins Memorial Perpetual Challenge Cup for the best working demonstration within Suffolk Skills.

“Students from the construction trades compete in three further competitions, one in carpentry and joinery, one in painting and decorating and the other in brickwork.”

Cabinet makers at Suffolk New College will show visitors the techniques and tricks of the trade used in furniture making and the students will be on hand to answer questions about the work they have completed.

Motorcycle maintenance and repair students from the college will bring a number of bikes to the show ground together with the latest workshop equipment.

Sue Jeffrey, head of catering and hospitality said: “This will be such an interesting and interactive stand for show visitors with activities to suit everyone.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for Suffolk New College Catering students to showcase their skills and to support members of the public in learning some new culinary skills.”

The Hair and Beauty stand will be vibrant and active where the hair stylists will use brightly coloured gels and hair strands to temporarily transform the public's hairstyles.

Suffolk New College beauty students will be carrying out a range of nail activities including mini-manicures and helping you to create exciting nail art designs.
