Dustclouds from the Sahara could create the unusual ‘blood rain’ phenomena over the next few days, according to a Met Office forecaster.

The rare occurrence, where dust from north Africa is swept up by northerly winds, could create a red hue in the skies, as well as leaving cars and homes with a fine coating of dust.

In October 2017, the UK saw the sky turn a shade of orange as dust whipped up from Storm Ophelia swept over Europe.

Although MET Office forecaster Mark Wilson said we are unlikely to see something quite that spectacular this time, there is potential for cars to see a light dusting of desert sand.

“The northerly winds have picked up some dust from north Africa,” he said

“Once that falls from the sky it could bring some dust to cars and homes.

“I have been told it has reached far north as parts of Scotland but we have no major reports of it happening.

“There is potential for it, but with a change of weather condition or direction, that risk will diminish.

“If people have some dust on their car, that is what has caused it.”

Phil Garner from Weatherquest said he was not predicting the blood rain phenomena to occur in the region.

Unfortunately, the recent spell of record-breaking warm February weather is also set to end - as rain clouds continue to head towards East Anglia

Weatherquest forecaster Fred Best, said the region is set for cooler, and wetter, days ahead.

“On Friday there will be a few showers around at first,” he said.

“We will get a bit of drier weather later on but there is still a risk of a few showers, especially in the east near the coast.”

Mr Best said the weekend was set to be cloudy and windy.

“Saturday will be cloudy will early rain showers,” he said

“Then the next area of rain will come in through the afternoon.

“It could bring some gusty conditions pushing through Saturday afternoon.

Saturday evening and Sunday morning are looking windy too.

“Certainly the weather will be unsettled this weekend.”
