Nine fire crews were despatched to Ipswich Hospital after smoke from a nearby bonfire blew into the maternity block and set off alarms.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) was alerted to the incident at around 10.50pm on Saturday night.

However, after investigations it emerged a nearby resident was having a large bonfire, and the smoke had blown into the maternity block – setting off alarms.

Three crews from Ipswich East, two from Woodbridge, two from Princes Street and two from Felixstowe attended the fire.

By 11.15pm the incident was reported to be concluded.

A spokesman for SFRS said: “The call out to Ipswich Hospital was a false alarm.

“Nine vehicles were ordered, and eight arrived at the site.”
