BUILDING work has started on a new £1 million-plus extension which will lead to 20 new jobs at the Glasswells World of Furniture store in Bury St Edmunds.

The 40,000 sq ft, two-storey extension will increase showroom space by 40 per cent, enabling the store to carry a wider choice of stock which, besides furniture, includes carpets, curtains and accessories.

In addition, capacity at the store's Place to Eat restaurant will also be expanded by 50pc, to 76 covers.

Glasswells, which is in its 56th year of trading and has four other stores, in Ipswich, Haverhill, Sudbury and Saffron Walden, says the expansion will make the store in Newmarket Road, Bury, the largest of its type in East Anglia.

Managing director Paul Glasswell said: "Our decision to extend the Bury St Edmunds store reflects on the company's commitment, started by my grandfather in 1946, to East Anglia.

"The extension brings with it not only more choice and room but also 20 new jobs. The message is that we're investing in both the area and the people."

The building contractor for the project is Barnes Construction of Ipswich, with the Bury St Edmunds firm Milburn, Leverington & Thurlow as architects.
