GIRLS from Amberfield again showed their expertise in robotics as teams featuring girls from the school at Nacton won three of the five trophies at a major competition.

The girls from the independent school - which has sent teams all over the world to take part in robotics championships - were taking part in the Lego League Tournament at Duxford Imperial War Museum.

The Year 7 robotic team the Chameleons won the Presentation Trophy for the best presentation on the theme of nanotechnology.

They had been working hard since September to build and programme the robot to complete the robotic missions together with investigating for the research presentation.

As well as taking the cup for the best presentation, the team were superb on their robotic performance and came third overall, being beaten only by two experienced teams who had previously won the national competition.

The Chameleons had been mentored by several of the year 10 girls who, along with friends from out of school, also entered a team called Nanomania into the tournament and were the overall winners on Saturday as well as taking the robot performance trophy with the highest score yet recorded at a UK tournament.

Team Nanomania will now represent the eastern region at the national finals in January at Birmingham University.

The aim of FIRST Lego League is to inspire young people to be involved and excited about science, engineering and technology. It is an international competition with 8,000-plus teams comprising more than 70,000 children.
