Suffolk Libraries has complied a list of books that celebrate diversity to mark LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) History Month.

The recommended titles include S/he, by Catherine Bruton; Release, by Patrick Ness; and More Happy Than Not, by Adam Silvera.

Librarian Sophie Green, who has led the project, she said the chosen books all had LGBT relationships as a strong theme and were written by popular and well-reviewed authors.

She added: “Increasingly, relationships in young adult fiction reflect the variety and complexity of real-life experience by considering more than just heterosexuality and binary gender – and not just for secondary characters. This is very important not just because all readers should have access to books which mirror their own experiences but also because reading fiction helps to create empathy and understanding for situations and feelings that we might not have experienced ourselves.”
