Parents of young children have shown their support for a campaign to improve access at Needham Market train station.

Councillors Terence Carter and Wendy Marchant, along with campaigner Nigel Andrews, engaged with mothers and fathers outside Bosmere Community Primary School this afternoon.

The trio gained four pages of signatures for a petition started by concerned resident Jen Overett.

To reach the Ipswich-bound platform travellers must use a stairway and campaigners say this makes access impossible for wheelchair users and difficult for those with mobility problems, parents with push chairs, cyclists and commuters with heavy luggage.

Ms Marchant said many parents outside Bosmere backed the drive.

She added: “Mums said they knew how difficult it was trying to get a buggy with little ones, up and down the 49 steps at either side of the subway at Needham Market.”

According to Ms Marchant, Suffolk County Council is writing a letter to the transport minister to apply for a grant to improve access.
