A taxi driver required hospital treatment after being assaulted by his passenger during a robbery in Ipswich.

The incident happened around 4.30pm yesterday.

The driver had collected a passenger from Elm Street and was initially asked to drive the man to Kerry Avenue. The passenger then asked instead to go to Discovery Avenue where he demanded money from the driver and then assaulted him.

A member of the public found the taxi driver at the junction of Discovery Avenue and Virginia Street.

The victim sustained facial, hand and arm injuries and was taken by ambulance for treatment at Ipswich Hospital.

The suspect is described by the victim as a man of mixed race appearance, about 20 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall and of slim build, who was wearing a black top and black jeans.
