Excavation work has started on the site of the first phase of the Ipswich Garden Suburb – or northern fringe – development.
But Ipswich Borough Council said this was not yet the start of formal infrastructure work on the site beside Henley Road on the edge of the town.
Final paperwork for the start of the infrastructure work still has to be signed off by the council and developers Crest Nicholson – but that does not prevent testing work from getting under way. Now that the crops have been harvested from the field it is possible to bring on earth-moving equipment to allow the contractors to take soil samples and find out where would be best for services and roads to go on the site.
The land is the site of the “Henley Gate” development, the first section of the new Ipswich Garden Suburb that is due to eventually extend from Henley Road to Tuddenham Road with more than 3,500 homes, schools and businesses to be built over the next 15 years.
