Police have launched a manhunt for the person who fired the shots.
Students, faculty and staff were instructed to stay in their buildings, according to a news release on the university's website.
The pair were shot near Memorial Hall around 1am.
A male student is in a stable condition, and a female has serious injuries, the university statement said.
