UK: Arson attack claims third victim

UK: A man has died in hospital from injuries he suffered in an arson attack which also claimed the lives of his daughter and grandson, police said today.

Melissa Crook, 20, and her 15-month-old son Noah died in the blaze in Chatham, Kent, in the early hours of last Saturday.

A spokeswoman for Kent Police said her father, Mark Crook, 49, who had previously been described as being in a life-threatening condition in East Grinstead Hospital, has now also died.

Mr Crook’s wife, Amanda, 49, and son, Bohdan, 21, were also injured in the blaze but have now been discharged from hospital following treatment.

Three people appeared at Maidstone Crown Court today charged in connection with the deaths.

Melissa Crook’s estranged husband, Danai Muhammadi, 23, a car salesman, of Britannia Street, Coventry, and his friend, Farhad Mahmud, 35, of Kensington House, Maidstone, are currently charged with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder although these are now expected to be amended.

Muhammadi’s girlfriend, Emma Smith, 21, of The Barley Lea, Stoke Aldermoor, Coventry, is charged with conspiracy to murder and arson with intent to endanger life.

A fourth person, a 37 year-old-man from Coventry, has been released on police bail while inquiries continue.
