UNSUNG heroes from mid Suffolk are celebrating today after being saluted for their heroic exploits in the community.The Mid Suffolk District Council-organised awards ceremony, held at Stowmarket's Cedars Hotel, heralded the contribution of more than 30 people.

The Mid Suffolk District Council-organised awards ceremony, held at Stowmarket's Cedars Hotel, heralded the contribution of more than 30 people.

Among those receiving recognition was Graham Lockwood, of Mendlesham.

Since being diagnosed with cancer nearly two years ago, the 43-year-old father-of-two has helped raise £60,000 through his sponsors and supporters.

Also commended were Teresa Rafiq, 34, and Helen Sheath, 38, both from Needham Market.

For the past three years, the pair have run a weekly 'Mini Music Makers' club for tuneful youngsters in the town.

Three teenagers were also applauded for their selfless and sterling work.

Kirstie Riches, 14, of Hintlesham Close, Stowmarket, was accompanied by proud parents Susan and Mervyn.

The Stowupland High School pupil was honoured for achievements that include helping to organise her local youth club and running a company of Brownies.

Stowmarket High School pupils, Hailey Jones, of Stowupland Road, Stowmarket, and Amy Nettleton, of Middlefield Drive, Great Finborough, were also jointly recognised.

The pair of 18-year-olds received their award for giving up their free time during their summer holidays to run a holiday opportunity play scheme for youngsters.
