It’s A Knockout - it was a programme that hit the nation in 1966, and fans in Ipswich couldn’t help but get caught up in the excitement.
In 1974, at the height of It’s A Knockout mania, Broomhill Pool hosted its own contest which saw local teams battle it out in a series of bizarre challenges, including a raft race across the lido while fully clothed, complete with a top hat.
The spectacle drew in a huge crowd of people who turned out to the Sherrington Road pool to cheer on the competitors.
Broomhill Pool closed in 2002 after 64 years of use, but plans are afoot to see it restored and reopened to the public. It is hoped that the lido could again be in use next year.
Were you among the competitors when Broomhill Pool hosted the It’s A Knockout tournament? Do you have other fond memories from the lido?
