YOUNGSTERS are flying the flag with pride to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

Pupils at Whitton Primary School in Ipswich, cheered loudly as the colours flew in the wind from the brand new flagpole by their school's main entrance.

Mayor of Ipswich Maureen Carrington-Brown joined headteacher Ann Taylor to unfurl the Union Flag, while pupils gathered in the playground to mark the occasion.

All the children had mini-flags to wave, and they thoroughly enjoyed joining in the celebrations. A few parents also came along to share in the excitement.

"The children were enthralled to see the flag going up," said Mrs Carrington-Brown. "They were so quiet when they were in the school, but once we got outside they found their voices – it was wonderful!"

Miss Taylor said the flagpole had been bought through funding from the Northgate Foundation.

"It will provide a focus for the school and publicise events to the Whitton community," she said.

"It will be a wonderful way to commemorate special occasions as well as communicating pride in our achievements to the locality."

The school will be holding a playground party next term to mark the Jubilee, and parents will also be organising a barbecue and fair to add to the fun.

Bursar Carol Tallent said they were also looking forward to the Queen's visit to Ipswich.

"We are hoping she will travel along Norwich Road and, if she does, we will take all the children along to cheer for her. We're ready with the flags!"
