The queen will be celebrating her official birthday this week, having turned 90 in April, below we explain why she has two birthdays each year and give you some facts you may have not known about Her Majesty.
• Queen Elizabeth II has already celebrated her 90th birthday, back in April, but she has an ‘official’ birthday in the summer, allowing for a grand royal celebration when the weather is likely to be more predictable. The tradition is believed to have started during King George II reign in 1748.
• The Queen was born at 2.40am on April, 21, 1926
• She was christened in the private chapel at Buckingham Palace
• She was educated at home along with her sister Margaret
• During the war the Queen and her sister were moved to Windsor castle for their safety
• At 13 she was a very strong swimmer and won the Children’s Challenge Shield at London’s Bath Club
• The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh married in Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947 with 2,000 guests present
•The Queen’s wedding dress was designed by Sir Norman Hartnell, the fabric for the dress was woven at Winterthur Silks Limited, Dunfermline and was sourced from Chinese silk worms
• The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have four children together - Prince Charles who is 67, 65-year-old Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, 56, and 52-year-old Prince Edward.
• The Queen is the first British Monarch to have celebrated a diamond wedding anniversary
The celebrations get underway in London with the annual Trooping the Colour display on Saturday where the Queen will inspect her troops.
