A WOMAN is in hospital after being attacked with a sword at her home in Ipswich.

Police were called to a house in Orchid Close at 1am where a 26-year-old woman had been punched and kicked and was suffering from serious facial injuries as a result of the sword attack.

Ambulances arrived at the scene at 1.07am and were told by police to wait in anticipation of a possible siege.

A spokesman said: “We were asked by police to hold off in case of a siege but we were eventually able to get to the woman. She was found to have serious facial injuries and we conveyed her to Heath Road Hospital.”

Two other women, aged 35 and 25, were arrested and are currently in police custody.

A police spokesman said: “We received a call in the early hours of the morning reporting that a woman had been punched and kicked and attacked with a sword. Two women are in custody at this time on suspicion of serious wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.”

The victim was taken to Ipswich Hospital where she is being treated for her wounds.

Carol Clements, 39, a resident of Orchid Close, said: “I was in my garden at about 10pm and I heard shouting from across the road but it went quiet after that.”

Another resident spoke of her concern about the amount of crime in the area. She said: “I was shocked to hear about the attack. I've been living here for nearly three years and we have seen a lot of trouble. A few months ago a boy was beaten up by a group of people.”
