Copleston Girls Football Club have proved themselves cup queens after every single one of their six junior teams reached the semi-finals of their respective knock-out competitions this season.

With the under-10 and under-11 sides having already booked a place in their cup finals, and the other four teams yet to play their semis, the trophy cabinet at Copleston could soon be bulging.

Club chairman and under-13 manager Matthew Steward said: “Considering the club was only formed four years ago this is quite an achievement.

“When we first formed we only had a one team and, to start with, we were getting regularly thrashed. The progress they have made from being completely dreadful to really competitive is astonishing.”

The girls specific football club was first formed four years ago under the name of Copleston Sports College Girls Football Club and, although they still play matches at the college, the club has since gone independent.

Steward said: “We are one of the few clubs that are run specifically for girls only. Although it is the same sport as for the boys, the girls' game is a completely different animal.

“Boys' football is a lot more competitive, don't get me wrong the girls want to win, but the whole environment is just a lot more relaxed.

“I think some see where the best male footballers can progress to and the big money and that is where the pushy parent comes from. Because women's football isn't the same, we don't get that in the girls' game and, to be honest, it makes it a much nicer environment to be around.

“It's a lovely family atmosphere and many of the girls, because they play in two year age group bands, already have friends in senior school before they move up from primary school.”

Copleston Girls Football Club are aiming to add an under-16 team to their ranks next season, as well as forming a new under-10 team.
