FOLLOWING what can only be described as an inspirational 2006, Woodbridge Warriors are looking forward to 2007, and are hoping for promotion into the London leagues.
Devoted first XV captain Ian Rafferty said: “As far as the first team is concerned we find ourselves in a creditable fourth position in Eastern Counties One, with eleven points.
“My aim from now to the end of the season is simple, to match or better our points total so far in a league where virtually every team is capable of beating any other.
“So 22 points or better by the close is our aim and I am sure we can do that as the squad looks stronger now than when we set out in September.
“We need to field as strong a team as possible to win the Suffolk Plate this year and to finish above Thurston in the league to qualify for the Suffolk Cup.
“To really improve we need to be playing better teams so promotion to the London leagues this year or next is within our grasp.
Club president Rob Simpson said: “We expected a tough 2006 among our senior teams, with the first XV promoted into EC1 and the club expanding to run three sides.
“The story so far is great. To date we have been able to field three sides whenever required. With the first XV in fourth position in EC1, the second XV seventh in Suffolk One, and the third XV ninth in Suffolk Two, not to mention our 20:20 vets' team, who are top of the league.
“We are expecting some players to return after Christmas and this will help to strengthen our sides across the board.
“At the start of the season if we had been offered our current situation going into the New Year we would have gladly taken it.
“I'd like to say well done to our coaches Adrian Foulger and Glyn Gough, who have done a fantastic job, and to on top of that I'd like to mention our junior section, as well as John Leming and all who help run such a thriving part of the club, and one that is essential to the future on-pitch success of Woodbridge Warriors.”
The Warriors are in action this weekend against West Norfolk, at Hatchley Barn, kick off 2.15pm.
