Town win 4-1 on aggregate

LIAM Trotter and Aidan Collins bagged the goals that put Ipswich into the FA Youth Cup final for the first time in 30 years.

Their strikes secured victory at White Hart Lane last night and completed a 4-1 aggregate semi-final triumph. However, striker Billy Clarke is a big doubt for next week's two-legged final against Southampton with a knee injury after he was carried off with three minutes remaining.

Clarke, a Republic of Ireland under-19 international who had scored against Spurs in the first leg, was again a threat for most of the game.

After 34 minutes, he jinked past four players before being crudely brought down by England Under-19 international Leigh Mills on the edge of the area.

Town captain Liam Craig rolled the free-kick to Cathal Lordan, who curled an shot just wide in the best effort of the first half.

Spurs created little in the opening 45 minutes. A header from Charlie Daniels that was easily saved by Town keeper Shane Supple was the closest they got.

Tottenham went for broke at half-time, introducing Jamie Davis and Simon Dawkins. The latter nearly made an instant impact when he held off a challenge from Collins but his shot went straight at Supple.

Substitute Claude Seanla had a golden opportunity to score for the home side when he raced on to a long ball with the Town defenders appealing for offside. But the excellent Supple denied Seanla and Dawkins's rebound hit an Ipswich defender.

Spurs made the breakthrough in the 62nd minute when Dawkins headed home after Mills flicked on Jamie O'Hara's corner.

But Town immediately fought back. Trotter, who had also scored in the first leg, held off Mills before flicking the ball over on-rushing Spurs keeper Tommy Forecast to walk the ball into the net.

Seanla missed another great chance with ten minutes left when he took the ball round Supple but then blazed over the bar.

If he had converted that chance Spurs might have forced extra-time. Instead Collins sealed the victory for Ipswich with a close-range header from a Craig free-kick.

In the other semi-final, Southampton gained a penalty shoot-out victory against Wolves last night.

The first leg of the final will be played at Southampton on Monday. A big crowd is expected at Portman Road for the second leg on Friday, April 22.
