THE Felixstowe Junior Tennis Tournament headed towards the final stages yesterday as the seeds continued to dominate play.

In the boys' 18-and-under singles, number one seed Richard Harrison made his first appearance of the tournament and beat David Hough in straight sets. Number two seed Robin Daniels didn't have such a smooth ride, as unseeded Lee Austin proved a tough opponent. Daniels took a 4-1 lead but Austin fought back to pull level at 4-4. Daniels then broke again to take the set 6-4.

The second set was all against serve as neither player managed to hold their own game until Daniels held at the fourth attempt. This became the crucial point in the match as the 2.2-rated player then broke Austin once more and served his way into the semi-finals.

In the other quarter-final, number four seed Chris Lovett knocked out number three seed Kevin Mee in a close three-set match. He will now face Sam Gould.

Gould was also involved in a tough battle against Austin in the 16-and-under singles. Gould, the number one seed in this age group, took the first set, but Austin took the second 6-4.

The final set could have gone either way but the 15-year-old from Chelmsford went on to win and move forward to his second semi-final of the tournament.

Mark Cooper also went through to the semi-finals with a straight-sets victory over Jack Hazlewood and his next opponent David Walters produced one of the comebacks of the day against Ben Roberts-Law.

The 15-year-old from Wales started hesitantly as Roberts-Law took the first set 6-3 and the second saw him face a 4-1 deficit, but a missed volley by Roberts-Law that would have made it 5-1 seemed to be the turning point as Walters pulled his way back into the match, taking it into a final set and winning that 6-0.

In the girls' tournament Holly Sherington won the 14-and-under singles, which was played as a round robin competition, and Nikola Fowler came runner-up. Sherington also reached the final of the 12-and-under singles by beating Fowler in straight sets.
