CHANGING his putter at lunchtime paid handsome dividends for Kristian Day.

The Hintlesham Hall member subsequently found his touch on the greens to win the Duncan Masters, a 36-hole scratch competition, that is very much part of the Fynn Valley calendar.

In fact it was the eighth year that the Duncan Masters has been held and is open to all club champions and runners-up from Suffolk clubs or nominated representatives.

The top 30 from Fynn Valley's own Club Championship also qualify to play in this event and compete for a handicap trophy.

In last month's Duncan Masters 15 Suffolk clubs were represented.

A strong breeze on the day made scoring difficult and co-leaders at lunchtime with 75 – four over par – were James Williams of Bungay & Waveney and Fynn Valley's young Jamie Abbott, with a host of good players tucked in behind them.

The freshening wind in the afternoon was to take further toll on the scoring, and Graham Wardley of Felixstowe believed he had done enough to secure the green jacket with an afternoon 74 to follow his first round 76.

However, Day's decision to change his putter made all the difference as he shot a fine 72 to add to his morning round of 77 to lift the trophy by a shot. Jamie Abbott added a 76 to his morning 75 to finish third.

The Fynn Valley nett prize went to Ian Phillips with 146 nett (four over par).

Home player Charles Plunkett also had an extraordinary day. Following a disastrous morning round of 99, he followed up with an afternoon score of 75 and achieved his ambition of reducing his handicap to 6!

The whole day was a great success and was well supported by most clubs in the county.

FYNN Valley Golf Club is holding its annual Pro-Am on Monday, October 21, supported by the PGA.

The first prize for the professionals is £1,000, the richest in Suffolk. There is also a £6,500 motorbike for any professional achieving a hole in one.

The event is sponsored by Fynn Valley. Entry is £150 for a team of three.

Amateurs and professionals who would like to participate should contact Fynn Valley professional Paul Wilby on 07710 757322 or the golf club on 01473 785267.
