Ipswich Town fans react as Gary O'Neil named Town boss

The Blues announced the former Bournemouth and Wolves manager as Kieran McKenna's successor at a Portman Road press conference this afternoon.

The 43-year-old has penned a three-year-deal with the club, moving from French side Strasbourg.

Many Town fans backed the new boss, urging others to get behind O'Neil.

One fan said: "Everyone back this man, no matter what!"

Luke Friend took to X to say: "New era hopefully. Time to get behind the new boss and hopefully he'll kick us on to PL survival. O'Neil at the wheel."

Harrison Yates, also on X, said: "Time to back him, wouldn't have been my first choice but can see the plus side."

Ben De'Ath said: "Welcome Gary. The start of a new era. Let's get right behind him and this team. Looking forward to August."

Christian Amos echoed these thoughts, saying: "Let's get behind the gaffer until he gives us reason not to back him.

"Would also like him to bring in some impact players to help us fight in the Premier League."

Another said: "Welcome gaffer. Every single Town fan needs to give him a chance.

"Let's judge him by his time here and not his previous experience."

However, not everyone was happy with the appointment.

Matt Temple posted on X: "Underwhelming and a bit of a positivity dampener seems the overriding sentiment from the fanbase.

"Little bit of usual contradictory stuff from Ashton who cannot keep up with his own spin.

"But we all hope to be positively surprised and that O'Neil surpasses expectations."

Steve Armes simply posted the word "nervous".

Another said: "Ergh. Horrendous appointment", with another posting that it was a "very disappointing appointment".

After being named Town manager, O'Neil said: "It is an honour to be appointed manager of this great football club.

"I have followed the progress the club has made over the last few years closely and to now have the opportunity to lead Ipswich Town in the Premier League is something I am hugely excited by."
