DANNY Phillips today promised to continue banging in the goals for Felixstowe and Walton United.

The 24-year-old was the leading scorer in the Premier Division of the Ridgeons League last season with 30 goals.

And his goal is to beat that in 2008/09.

Felixstowe start the campaign with a home game against perennial championship chasers Wroxham at Dellwood Avenue tomorrow, and Phillips is all geared up to hit the back of the net from the start.

He just missed out on leading the scoring charts in the Ridgeons League in 2006/07 - and made up for that last season.

“My targets are always to beat my previous year's tally,” said Phillips, who is the son of former Sudbury Town front man Donnie Davis.

“And it is no different this time, although it will be no easy task.

“I am comfortable with what I do, but you cannot score if you do not get chances - and this is down to my team mates.

“Felixstowe finished eighth last season and my main aim - having committed myself to them for another season - is to help lift them up the table.”

Felixstowe have former Grundisburgh and Brantham coach Mark Manning helping manager Steve Potts this season while much admired forward David Grimwood has been persuaded to leave Metaltec SIL football with Grundisburgh and move to Dellwood Avenue.

Phillips, who used to watch his father play on the local football scene, started with the Woodbridge Under-18 side before progressing to the reserves and a few matches in the first team.

He then moved to Needham Market where he quickly earned himself a goalscoring reputation before joining Felixstowe four years ago.

Whitton United begin life in the top flight with a game at Mildenhall while Woodbridge Town are at home to Histon reserves.

In the First Division, Debenham Leisure Centre have boosted their squad with the signing of Walsham-le-Willows central defender Neil Gooderham.

The Hornets start with a home game against Godmanchester with manager Mel Aldis pleased with his capture.

“The signing of Neil has given everyone at the club a big lift. He is a player I wanted to sign last year but was unable to persuade him.”

Aldis has also signed former Bury Town and Whitton United defender Lee Catling, who has been out for 18 months with a cruciate ligament injury.

Debenham captain John Farrell has decided to take a year out of the game, but the rest of last season's squad have re-signed, including top scorer Stuart Jopling.

Brantham Athletic start at Gorleston after their move up from the SIL while. Next Tuesday they entertain an Ipswich Town XI with admission free and a 7pm start.
