Ipswich motocross starlet Jake Last is enjoying finishing first

Seven-year-old Heath School pupil Jake Last had barely learned to walk when he first got on a motocross bike, and it was soon clear to see that he was a star in the making.

The youngster, who has been helped by local businesses, Jim Aim and 94 MX, began taking part in competitions last year and has won titles already in the EASSC (East Anglia Schoolboy Scrambling Club) Auto Challenge as well as the Norfolk and Suffolk Cup and the East Anglia Cup.

Jake also finished seventh in the British MX Master Kids UK competition and was part of the East Anglia team that won the recent Compass Cup at Mildenhall.

Having competed on a 50cc bike with no gears this season, Jake, who is ranked within the top-eight in the country for his age, will step up a level next year to ride 65cc machines, with gears, against other children up to the age of 10.

Jake is not the first member of his family to excel on two wheels either, his grandfather Steve, Steve’s brother Andy and their father Fred having all competed in the sport over the years.

And he wasn’t deterred from calling it a day, despite suffering an eye-watering injury at the age of five, the youngster being involved in a collision with a fence that saw him lose five teeth and suffer a broken wrist and cheekbone.

Grandfather Steve said: “He is a natural and has won just about every event he has entered this year.

“He is enjoying what he is doing at the moment and that is the main thing, but we will see how it goes and what else he becomes interested in.”
