Pope, who was released by Ipswich Town at 16 and went on to play for Bury Town while studying at West Suffolk College, came off the bench in the second half at Elland Road to make his first appearance on the international stage.

The 26-year-old will now head to the World Cup in Russia as England’s No 3 goalkeeper, and is happy to do so with a cap to his name.

“That was nice, to help prepare myself mentally and get ready to go,” said Pope.
