DESPITE now having money in his pocket Ipswich Town manager Jim Magilton is to stay loyal to his current squad.
News today that the takeover by businessman Marcus Evans has been confirmed - subject to a shareholders' emergency general meeting thumbs-up - will give Magilton the financial clout to make an impact when the transfer window opens next month.
Although Magilton has identified his squad needs strengthening he will not be going out to make
massive changes despite £12million going into the Town coffers from Evans' account.
Two, possible three, newcomers are all that is likely.
Promotion to the Premier League goes part and parcel with an Evans Group takeover that was first revealed in the Evening Star.
But this season might be too soon, and 2008/09 would see the foundations of the new deal firmly in place
and the club ready to go up for a long stay in the top flight.
Magilton said: “I have been looking to bring in players since my first day here in charge.”
“There are positions where we are looking - and the takeover makes no difference to this.
“There has not been a single day when my players have not given me their best - in training and in games.
“There will not be wholesale signings.”
And talking about the extra pressure on him and his squad following the takeover, Magilton said: “This comes with the territory - so things are no different now to when I took over.
“The pressure of getting results is part and parcel of being a manager and footballer.
“I will have extra capital now.
“And this is a huge plus for me, but I will only go for the right type of players to bring in - the same policy I have adopted all along.”
