THE summer sale of Jordan Rhodes could come back to haunt Roy Keane as Premier League clubs are reported to be lining up bids of around 2million for the prolific young striker.

Rhodes hit the fastest-ever headed hat-trick in Football League history on Saturday when his new team Huddersfield Town beat Exeter City 4-0 to take them to eighth in League One.

The 19 year-old, who moved to the Galpharm Stadium in August for an undisclosed fee (believed to be around 800,000), struck in the 44th, 50th and 52nd minutes, to take his tally for the season to 11 goals.

It was the fastest headed treble of goals by a player since the great Everton striker Dixie Dean in the 1930s.

Rhodes' departure from Portman Road shocked many Town fans, who had been eagerly awaiting his return this term after a highly-successful loan spell with Brentford. Rhodes' goals helped the Bees clinch the League Two title.

A report yesterday suggested that Premier League side Stoke City and Wolverhampton Wanderers are prepared to battle it out for the youngster's signature when the transfer window opens in January.

The report suggested that Huddersfield boss Lee Clark will be offered around 2m to part with Rhodes.

Clark, however, is determined to resist any such bids. He said: “There is no price on Jordan's head. I don't have to worry about him being sold because we have a very wealthy owner.

“But I realise people who score goals regularly can become very valuable.”

The Huddersfield boss also revealed details of how he succeeded in getting Ipswich to part with one of their more valuable young assets.

The former Newcastle United midfielder said: “I phoned Roy Keane over the summer about a few other players and cheekily mentioned Jordan's name at the end of the list. I got no response about Jordan but I kept at it and gradually wore Keane down.”

Rhodes is the son of former Ipswich Town goalkeeping coach Andy Rhodes who, according to Clark, has been a major influence on the young forward.

Speaking after Rhodes' stunning display on Saturday, Clark added: “Jordan's tea-total and comes from a family where both his mum and dad are football people, so he knows what the game is all about and I believe he can reach the top. But I've no idea what he will do with his man-of-the-match champagne!”
