Connor Wickham (2), Jack Ainsley, Ed Upson, Ronan Murray and Jamie Griffiths notched Ipswich's goals, with the Blues at one stage 4-0 ahead.
But Northampton got it back to 5-4 before Murray struck a sixth.
Roy Keane was watching, with Owen Garvan playing.
That's 16 goals in two games the Town boss has now witnessed, all in the space of 18 hours.
