EX-SWIMMER Ian Westlake has made a big splash this season after being thrown in at the deep end with Ipswich Town.
The 20-year-old midfielder's career is progressing ahead of the schedule he drew up for himself in the current campaign.
He admitted: "My big chance has come earlier than I expected. I was thinking that if I got on as a sub during the busy Christmas period I'd be doing well."
Instead Westlake went into today's game at Millwall, which marked the half-way point in the league programme, having appeared in 18 of Town's 24 first-team fixtures.
Eleven starts, a further seven outings as a substitute and two goals is an excellent record for someone who had convinced himself he would be, at best, a fringe performer.
And Westlake, who three years ago represented England at water polo, insists: "There is a lot more to come."
