IPSWICH tennis prospect Kevin Mee landed the 18-and-under singles title as the Ensors Suffolk (closed) junior tennis championships reached a climax.
Many of the top seeds faced each other in the finals and in the boys' section most of the finals were one-sided affairs.
But Mee's three-set battle with No. 2 seed Alex Collingwood (Bury St Edmunds) proved to be a gripping contest.
The No. 1 seed was favourite to take the title but Collingwood – previously knocked out of the 16-and-under competition at the semi-final stage – had even more incentive to do well.
The first set proved to be straight forward for Mee who lost just one way en route to a 6-1 success.
But Collingwood started to produce more first serves which allowed him to control the majority of the points from the baseline as he won the second set 6-4.
Both players began the final set quite nervously and it was Collingwood who made the first real error by producing a double fault that gave Mee an early break.
Mee promptly cruised into a 4-0 lead as Collingwood made unforced errors and, following two double breaks, the Ipswich player eventually completed victory with a 6-3 third set triumph.
The performance of the week in the boys' section came from Hadleigh's Matthew Hough, who completed the double in the 12-and-under singles and the 14-and-under competition.
That achievement was matched in the girls' section by Amy Robinson as the 14-year-old from Newmarket completed title victories in the 16-and-under singles as well as the 18-and-under.
In the boys' 10-and-under singles final Joseph Davis beat below-par club-mate Harry Mayhew in straight sets (6-2, 6-1).
Other good performances came from David Hough (Hadleigh), who won the boys' 16-and-under singles, Perri Daniel from Ipswich who won the girls' 12-and-under competition and Grace Hutson from Iken.
The latter, after being knocked out of the girls' 16-and-under singles at the semi-final stage, was able to beat No. 1 seed Alice Campbell Lamerton to take the 14-and-under title.
